Motivation: Determine if she need redemption for the evils she may have helped to propagate, and if so, find it.
Like her mother, Maerylle Nathandem is a competent warrior. Also like her mother, she has found good pay working for the Dragon Prince, Ghalorathas, through his representative, the Castellan Cedowen Uriguld. She is proficient with a number of weapons and has always been very enthusiastic in combat, although she is not above some dirty tricks. After a few years of work, she discovered that her exuberance emboldens her allies and demoralizes her opponents.
Until just a few months ago, Maerylle was an up and coming warrior under the command of Castellan Uriguld. The Castellan commands a significant force of militia, reeves and mercenaries, all serving to further the aims of the Dragon Prince. Based in the town of Ghalorathas between the Copper Mountains and the Great Wild Wood, Maerylle has spent five years doing everything from intelligence gathering to tithe collection to brute enforcement. Recently, she has grown disillusioned with her work and has left the town. While many things had led her to this decision, one important part involves the elven village in the Great Wild Wood burned a year ago.
Maerylle was involved in planning the action there, doing some investigation and helping to train some mercenaries. While she did not take part in the attack, she soon became concerned about the extent of the brutality. And most recently, she discovered that one of the dead there was a young elven girl named Lili Saevannari. First, the young girl could not possibly have been involved in the dissident religious movement that was the purported target of the attack. And second, Maerylle has reason to believe the girl may be related to her.
Connection: Traril and “Fward” (and possibly Ash). Maerylle has information regarding the destruction of the village of the moon-worshipping elves in the Great Wild Wood one year ago. She has some guilt, some anger, and quite a bit of confusion. She is interested in finding someone to help her find resolution, and possibly absolution. At the very minimum, she is willing to aid these affected by the tragedy in any way she can.
Connection: Hektor, the ex-criminal. Sometime between 3 and 5 years ago, Maerylle ran into some trouble at a wayside inn while traveling. Maerylle remembers that the sturdy warlock came to her rescue, but objective witnesses might say he helped her only to claim the brutish attacker’s possessions as his reward. Over the next few years, she ran into Hektor again a couple of times. In her position as a traveling reeve or a hired enforcer, she has been able to help him through some sticky spots resulting from his proclivity for criminal activity.
Secret: Maerylle’s parents and the Dragon. Completely unknown to Maerylle, one, the other, or possibly both of her parents have long been a devoted servant to Ghalorathas, acting as spy, enforcer and perhaps even assassin. In fact, their relationship may have been yet another machination of the Dragon Prince with Maerylle’s birth an unplanned accident.
Maerylle is aware that her mother has served under the Castellans of the Dragon Prince in a similar capacity as Maerylle does herself but if she were anything beyond just a hired sword, she has kept it well-hidden. Of her elven father, Maerylle knows only that her mother called him Saevannari, which in elven means West Forest Walker.
